Hours and material costs are planning estimates. Overwrite them with yours in the kit. Market ranges are homeowner-facing national figures from public guides, dated on the rate guide. “Below” means a one-job ticket at your numbers lands under the band. This is cost recovery, not pricing advice.

01

Your hourly rate is not your wage.

The most common answer on the plumbing forums is “double what I made at the shop.” Your rate has to carry burden, the van, insurance, the phone, the software, the unbillable hours and a margin. At 110 billable hours a month and $3,000 of overhead, a $36 wage needs $90 an hour before you've made a dollar of profit.

Wage × (1 + burden)$45.00
+ overhead ÷ billable hours$27.27
= break-even$72.27
÷ (1 − 20% margin) = loaded rate$90.34

02

Flat rate for installs. Hourly for the mystery.

A toilet, a disposal, a 50-gallon heater: you've done each a hundred times, so price them flat and get paid for being fast. A leak you can't see yet is time and materials, first hour at a premium, and you say so before you start. The book has both columns, customer-supplied and you-supplied, because the margin is in the second one.

50-gal tank, you supply, 3 h + $850 parts$1,465
At $90/h and 40% markup, plus trip$1,555 ticket
Market band (Keeley's 2022 book)$1,500–2,400
Plumber lying under a kitchen sink fitting a disposal
$1,555That ticket is at the bottom of the band. Most shops run 2× on materials, not 1.4×. Slide the markup to 75% and the same job is $1,850, still inside the band. That's the conversation the builder is for.
03

Two columns: they supply, or you supply.

A customer-supplied faucet is labor plus a trip. A faucet you supply is labor, the part at markup, the supply-house run, the warranty and the stock on the van. Quote both, say which is which, and stop eating the difference when the box from the big-box store turns out to be missing a part.

Kitchen faucet, customer-supplied$135
Toilet, customer-supplied$175
Toilet, you supply standard 1.28 gpf$445
PEX coil, fittings, a stop valve, a fill valve, a flapper, a P-trap, a pipe wrench and a clipboard
$300–500What a disposal costs you at the supply house. Published install totals are $450–850. The part is your profit line, not a pass-through.
